What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Think of it as giving your brain a small nudge towards a healthier rhythm.

Why consider TMS?

TMS is most often used to treat depression, especially when other treatments have not been effective. It is also an established treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and has evidence supporting its use in smoking cessation and some chronic pain conditions. Research is ongoing into other potential uses, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety disorders and stroke recovery.

How effective is it?

Research shows that many people benefit from TMS treatment, with about half experiencing a significant lift in mood and roughly a third achieving full recovery. Often, meaningful improvement can be seen within 3 - 4 weeks.

Who should avoid TMS?

TMS isn't suitable for everyone. It's not recommended if you have:

  • Metal implants in or near your head (excluding dental fillings).

  • A history of seizures or epilepsy.

Are there any side effects?

Most people tolerate TMS well and side effects are usually mild and short-lived. Possible side effects include:

  • Mild headaches or scalp discomfort at the treatment site.

  • Lightheadedness or tingling sensations.

  • Tiredness.

How does it work?

During a TMS session, you are comfortably seated while a magnetic coil is placed against your scalp. The coil delivers targeted magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain. Each session lasts around 20 - 30 minutes and you remain fully awake throughout. After your session, you can return straight to your usual daily activities, including driving or working.

What’s the treatment schedule?

Frequency:
Usually 5 sessions per week.

Duration:
A total of 20 - 30 sessions, delivered at a frequency that is personalised to your situation and needs.

  • once per day for 4 - 6 weeks.

  • can be condensed to 2 - 3 weeks by having multiple treatments per day.

Maintenance:
Some people who find TMS effective choose to return for booster sessions to help maintain their recovery.
